If you've lived in and around Talke, Stoke-on-Trent, you've seen the change in how the Caldwell Tavern's Toby Carvery has been run; from when it began, where it stumbled and where it is today. With the constant changing reviews of the quality of food and service from the locals, I decided to pay an up-to-date visit.
I went through the normal carvery proceedings of queuing for my food, choosing from today's selection of meats and vegetables (even though I tend to avoid meats on a carvery - don't ask - I'm fussy). Got a whole lot of potatoes and honestly, I was very pleased. Caldwell's Toby Carvery's are one of my go-to-meal decisions, they're quick, easy, usually don't require to pre-book and up the road from where I live. A vegetarian carvery on a Sunday averaged out at £7.49, a regular £11.29 however cheaper on weekdays.
However, having visited when the potatoes have been a little hard, and the veg a little cold; I believe it is the time of day in which you visit to get the best for your money. Visiting at prime hours - for lunch at 1pm or tea at 6pm - the kitchen constantly has new batches of hot food filtering out.
Overall atmosphere, food, drink and value for money:
